Cultural Programme

Welcome to the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF). This new edition is rich in the treasures of literature, arts, science, and knowledge, which you will find on the stands of publishers, many of whom have travelled from around the world to showcase their new, rare, and important books, and in the halls of our diversified cultural, intellectual, and artistic programme. At this year’s edition of ADIBF we honour the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God bless his soul, as Personality of the Year. Sheikh Zayed was the first figure in the history of the United Arab Emirates, par excellence, and culture was an essential part of his strategy in building a knowledge-based society. He always strived to achieve a balance preserving local customs and traditions and building a bright future that would be open to other cultures.

This year’s guest of honour is Poland. Interestingly, it was an Arab, Ibrahim ibn Yaqub, who gave the world the first reliable written descriptions of the European nation a thousand years ago. In this spirit of cultural exchange, we warmly welcome our Polish guests to this year’s edition of ADIBF, and we hope to show them our hospitality, share the traditional Arabic coffee of Abu Dhabi, and learn more closely about their culture, history, arts, fashion, and food. As is customary, at this year’s edition of ADIBF our honourable guests will have an opportunity to meet with a wide range of elite writers from around the world. Attendees will include laureates of the Sheikh Zayed Book Awards, the International Prize for Arabic Fiction, known as the Arabic Booker, and the Ibn Battuta Award for Travel Literature, as well as other intellectual, literary, and scientific figures.

They will participate in a full programme of interesting seminars and discussion sessions. At this year’s edition of ADIBF we will celebrate the book and its makers with a variety of activities, including book signings of the most recent Arabic titles, intellectual meetings and discussion seminars on the most important cultural and intellectual issues, as well as artistic, 2 educational, and recreational activities. We hope our book fair, the region’s most famous and fastest growing, will show that culture can be both intellectual and a pleasure.
