Shereen Abouelnaga is a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Cairo University.

She has published critical and literary articles in cultural and literary journals, with a special focus on gender.

Her Arabic books include: “A Passion of Difference: Readings in Selected Feminist Texts” (1997), “Feminist or Women’s?” (2001), “Nation in the Narration of Arab Women Writers” (2003), and “Intellectuals in the Transitional Phase” (2014).

She is a member of the editorial board of New Perspectives on Theory/Culture/Politics (Centre for Critical and Cultural Theory, Cardiff University) and a jury member (then Chair) of the Naguib Mahfouz Medal Award organized by the AUC.

Aware of her position in the third world, Abouelnaga views the world from the lens of a socialist feminist. She is concerned with reading the manifestations of neo-patriarchy and neo-liberalism that precipitate the rise of the ‘new text’: a powerful sign of resistance.

Author and Translator

Specializing in journalistic and academic writing, she has accumulated over 25 years of experience. Holding both a master's and a doctoral degree in Political Science, as well as a master's degree in Translation, she has taught Political Science and Islamic Thought at various institutes and universities in the Arab world and Europe. In addition to her expertise in political sociology, she has a particular interest in women's issues, heritage, and Islamic thought.

She has held and currently holds several academic and administrative positions at institutions such as the Center for Civilization Studies, the Arab Organization for Combating Discrimination, Zayed University, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, and various entities within Abu Dhabi Media Zone Authority. She has also served as the managing editor of "Woman and Civilization" magazine, published by the Women and Civilization Studies Association in Cairo.

Moreover, she has worked in advisory and administrative roles in prestigious institutions such as the United Nations, the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi, and Abu Dhabi Media Company. She has authored and contributed to numerous books and studies and has published many articles in newspapers such as Al-Ahram in Egypt, Al-Hayat in London, Al-Ittihad in the UAE, Le Monde Diplomatique in French, and Carnegie Gate in the United States.
