Avicenna’s "The Canon of Medicine" has been a pillar of medical knowledge for centuries. This session offers an opportunity to rediscover his remarkable medical legacy, which transcended the boundaries of its time to become a foundational reference in medicine across ages, highlighting Avicenna’s status as a true father of modern medicine.
The session will explore how his groundbreaking ideas contributed to shaping modern medical concepts, from diagnosing illnesses to treatment foundations and drug formulations. It will also examine the connections between his ancient clinical texts and contemporary medical practice, shedding light on the scientific and ethical values that continue to inspire doctors and researchers to this day.
Consultant and Director of Oncology Services at Burjeel Holdings
The Founder and Director of the Cancer Institute at Burjeel Medical City, part of VPS Healthcare. Dr Al Shamsi also serves as the President of the Emirates Oncology Society and is an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Oncology at the College of Medicine, University of Sharjah.
He graduated with honours from University College Cork - National University of Ireland in 2005, then completed his internal medicine training at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. He further pursued an Advanced Fellowship Programme in General Oncology, followed by Gastrointestinal Oncology and Palliative Care. Later, he joined the MD Anderson Cancer Centre at the University of Texas as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology.
Dr Al Shamsi is recognised as one of the leading oncologists in the United Arab Emirates.
