This session honours the journey of one of the pioneers of the Kalima Translation Project, highlighting his contributions to bringing literature and knowledge to Arabic readers. It reflects on his enduring impact on the cultural and translation landscape and explores the role of translation in building bridges between cultures and enriching the Arabic library.
Tarek Rashed is the head of the head of the Department of Arabic Language Research and Studies and the Department of Education and Arabic Language Research at the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, part of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi.
He was a programme creator and researcher at the News Center - Abu Dhabi TV, an affiliate of the Abu Dhabi Media Company, and also worked as a translator and editor at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research in Abu Dhabi. He is also a freelance writer, editor and translator with published work in many Arab newspapers, magazines and research centres. He won the third edition of the National Center for Translation in Cairo’s Youth Translation Award in 2015 for the book When Giants Fall: An Economic Roadmap for the End of the American Era. He was also longlisted for the Sheikh Zayed Book Award’s translation category for the book A Nation of Geniuses in 2015 and the book
The First World War in the Middle East in 2016.
Rashed worked as an editor and translator for many Arab and international newspapers and websites. He translated many books with the Kalima Project for Translation in Abu Dhabi, including Fair World: A History of World's Fairs and Expositions, Climate Change and When Science Loses Its Way. He also translated many books for The Arabic Magazine in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, including The Emperor of All Maladies, Physics of the Future, The Future Is Asian and The Strangest Man: The Hidden Life of Paul Dirac, Mystic of the Atom.
